STEPS Rehabilitation is delighted to announce that several of our clients are participating in the 2024 WheelPower Inter Spinal Unit Games at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. This prestigious annual event welcomes over 100 patients from 14 Spinal Injury Centres across the UK and is a significant milestone in the rehabilitation journey for individuals recovering from spinal cord injuries.

2024 WheelPower Inter Spinal Unit Games

Starting on 24th September, our clients will engage in a week of competitive sporting events, they will have the opportunity to take part in over 20 activities, including archery, wheelchair rugby, athletics, fencing, basketball, powerlifting, boccia, swimming, shooting, and tennis. Throughout the week, they will also have the chance to train with some of the UK’s top wheelchair sports athletes and coaches, gaining invaluable experience and insights into the world of adaptive sports.

The Games offer not only friendly competition but also a crucial platform for rebuilding confidence and showcasing the transformative power of sport in post-injury rehabilitation.

STEPS Rehabilitation

Several of our clients Graham, Josh, Vanessa and Liam, supported by STEPS staff members Joe, Pete, and Leah, will represent STEPS Rehabilitation during the Games. We are excited to see them take on this challenge and support them against the other teams.

At STEPS Rehabilitation, we are passionate about encouraging our clients to explore new sports and activities as part of their recovery. Engaging in physical activity post-injury offers numerous benefits, from improving physical health to enhancing mental well-being. Our rehabilitation programmes introduce clients to a wide range of therapies, rehabilitation technology and additional activities, such as sports and activities that support their recovery.

Former STEPS Rehabilitation client, Shaun Cook, exemplifies how adaptive sports can change lives. After sustaining a spinal cord injury, Shaun underwent an intensive rehabilitation programme at STEPS in 2019. Following his recovery, he discovered a passion for kayaking and went on to achieve gold medals at the International Va’a Federation World Distance Championships in Samoa and the International Canoe Federation World Marathon Championships in Denmark in 2023. Shaun’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and support, and he is now setting his sights on the 2028 Summer Paralympics in Los Angeles.
