Location: Alexander House, 30 Troutbeck Road, Sheffield S7 2QA

Reports to: Scott Parkin, Head of Facilities

Purpose of the role:

We're looking for a practical, hands-on problem solver to join our Facilities team at STEPS Rehabilitation.

Someone who enjoys figuring things out, isn't afraid of a challenge and takes pride in finding solutions. You don't need to know everything, but you do need the initiative to investigate, research and work things out rather than wait for someone else to give you the answer.

It's an exciting time to join us. STEPS is growing, with expansion and acquisition bringing new buildings, new challenges and more opportunities for our Facilities team to get involved. As our estate grows, so does the variety and scale of the work we undertake.

We're a small, experienced and close-knit team who look out for one another. We have a good range of skills between us, a well-equipped workshop and the freedom to tackle plenty of work ourselves rather than automatically calling someone in.

What does a typical day look like?

The short answer? There isn't really one.

You might start your morning checking the hydrotherapy pool, move on to planned maintenance inspections, investigate a fault with a building system and spend the afternoon helping with a refurbishment project.

Another day could involve repairing a piece of equipment, coordinating with a specialist contractor, taking a company vehicle for its MOT or making something from scratch in our workshop.

We also do the less glamorous jobs. Whether it's clearing snow, dealing with waste, moving furniture or helping set up for an event, everyone gets stuck in.

Occasionally, we're involved in things that sit well outside a typical maintenance role. You might find yourself working behind the scenes at one of our charity events, making sure everything runs smoothly while everyone else enjoys themselves.

How we work

We're not your typical maintenance team working from a handwritten job book or a whiteboard full of outstanding repairs.

We use MaintainX, a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), to manage our planned maintenance, inspections, repairs and day-to-day workload.

Colleagues across STEPS can report maintenance issues directly into the system, allowing us to see what's happening across the estate, prioritise jobs and respond as quickly as possible.

We take pride in keeping our buildings and equipment to a high standard, and we aim to deal with issues before they become bigger problems.

Our approach is simple: if something needs doing, we want to know about it, get it organised and get it sorted.

You'll be expected to take ownership of your work orders, keep records up to date and communicate progress. We're organised, but we're not buried in paperwork. We use technology to make our jobs easier and help the team work more effectively.

People are just as important as the practical work

STEPS is a rehabilitation facility, and our clients are at the heart of everything we do.

Although this is a maintenance role, you'll regularly come into contact with clients, their families and colleagues from across the organisation.

Some of our routine checks, such as hot water temperature monitoring and water hygiene inspections, involve entering occupied bedrooms. You'll need to feel comfortable knocking on a door, introducing yourself, explaining what you're there to do and carrying out your work respectfully, with consideration for each client's privacy, dignity and rehabilitation.

The same goes for our day-to-day interactions with colleagues. We're fortunate to work alongside a genuinely friendly and welcoming team at STEPS, and we want someone who contributes to that atmosphere.

When you're doing your daily walkaround, we expect you to say hello, be approachable and build good relationships with the people around you.

We're looking for someone who is as comfortable speaking to people as they are working with tools. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, but you do need to be friendly, confident, respectful and happy to engage with others.

It's varied, sometimes challenging and rarely boring.

Let's have a conversation.

We're more interested in finding the right person than rushing to fill a vacancy.

We know that a CV doesn't always tell the full story, and not everyone is at their best sitting through a formal interview.

If this sounds like the sort of work you'd enjoy, we'd be happy to start with an informal conversation. Tell us a bit about your background, what you're good at and the sort of work you enjoy.

We're open to different skills and experiences, and we're happy to invest time in finding someone who will be a great addition to the team.

If you're someone who enjoys fixing things, figuring things out and getting stuck into a wide variety of work, we'd really like to hear from you.

Specific responsibilities

This Job description is an outline which reflects the present requirements of the post and is not intended to be exhaustive list of duties the post holder will be expected to fulfil.

Our Facilities team looks after a specialist rehabilitation environment, so there's a lot more involved than general building repairs.

  • Planned preventative maintenance (PPM) – a major part of our work, including fire alarm testing, fire door inspections, water hygiene checks, equipment inspections, vehicle checks and other scheduled maintenance. These aren't just tick-box exercises. We take our responsibilities seriously and expect our team to understand what they're checking and why.
  • Hydrotherapy pool – daily water quality testing, chemical monitoring, filtration, backwashing, plant maintenance and fault-finding. Training will be provided, although previous commercial pool plant experience would be a real advantage.
  • Building systems – working with heating, ventilation, air conditioning, mechanical plant and building management systems (BMS). Previous experience with building controls would be particularly useful.
  • Reactive maintenance – anything from a leaking tap, faulty door closer or damaged flooring to troubleshooting equipment, replacing components, adapting furniture or tackling more involved mechanical and building faults.
  • Specialist equipment – supporting the maintenance of rehabilitation equipment, profiling beds, hoists and passenger lifts. This includes specialist responsibilities such as emergency passenger release from lifts, following appropriate training and authorisation.
  • Projects and refurbishments – we're not afraid of larger projects. Our existing team brings experience in shopfitting, kitchen fitting and specialist installations, and we regularly undertake building improvements and refurbishment work ourselves.
  • Contractors and suppliers – working directly with our approved contractors and specialist engineers, discussing technical issues, arranging visits and following problems through to resolution.
  • Everything else – company vehicle servicing arrangements, grounds maintenance, waste management, seasonal work, event support and the unexpected jobs that come with looking after a busy estate.
