Every year, approximately 350,000 people are admitted to hospitals in the UK due to head injuries. Research indicates that the number of acquired brain injury (ABI) cases is on the rise. Every brain injury is unique, resulting in varied recovery times and responses to different therapies based on individual circumstances. At STEPS Rehabilitation, we provide specialised residential rehabilitation programmes tailored to each client's needs once they are medically stable and able to leave the hospital.

how long does brain injury recovery take?

The recovery time following a brain injury varies widely depending on the severity of the injury and individual circumstances. Factors that influence recovery time include the severity of the injury, with mild injuries often requiring weeks to months for recovery, while severe injuries could take years. The type of rehabilitation is also crucial, as intensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation can significantly enhance recovery outcomes. Additionally, individual factors such as age, overall health, and support systems play a crucial role in the recovery process. At STEPS Rehabilitation, we understand that each client's journey is unique, and we provide personalised programmes to support an individuals recovery at their own pace.

different types of brain injury

There are several types of brain injuries, each requiring specific approaches to rehabilitation, these include:

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) - Caused by external force, such as a car accident or fall.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) - Non-traumatic injuries like stroke, tumours, or infection.

Concussion - A mild TBI, often resulting from sports injuries or minor accidents.

Diffuse Axonal Injury - Severe injury involving widespread damage to brain cells.

our approach to brain injury rehabilitation at STEPS Rehabilitation

At STEPS Rehabilitation, we offer comprehensive residential rehabilitation programmes for clients who are medically stable. We can admit clients who are in a PDOC state, (Prolonged disorder of consciousness) with tracheostomies or PEG feeding tubes but are unable to treat those with NG tubes, ventilation, or on an IV drips. Our experienced interdisciplinary team provides a full range of therapies, ensuring a holistic approach to brain injury recovery. At any given time, we are usually caring for around 10 residential clients who have sustained an ABI.

We also offer Botulinum Toxin injections and spasticity management, helping clients with symptoms of involuntary muscle stiffness.
