Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week to be worked flexibly between Monday & Sunday including day and night shifts
Purpose of the role: To lead, develop and support the Rehabilitation Assistant Team in their role to provide the best possible therapeutic care to the clients at STEPS. They will also lead by example in providing high quality holistic care to STEPS clients, who have complex care and rehabilitation needs, providing support throughout their journey, aligned with the STEPS values and behaviours and working as a key member of the inter-disciplinary team.
Specific responsibilities

- To provide leadership for our team of Rehabilitation Assistants as they provide outstanding care to our clients.
- To provide supervision and appraisal to the Rehabilitation Assistants.
- To ensure all Rehabilitation Assistants are compliant with the code of conduct and STEPS policies and procedures, actioning any conduct and performance issues with the support of the People & Culture Team.
- To provide day to day leadership and management to Rehabilitation Assistants through regular contact and communication during each shift, being a key point of contact for any issues or questions as they arise and championing the STEPS Values
- To work with the Nurse in charge of each shift to ensure that floor allocations are managed.
- To ensure communication is encouraged with all teams on the floor.
- To be a part of the recruitment process for RA’s and support in the induction process of new team members/Agency staff.
- To play a part in the development and training for the Ras, identifying training and development needs.
- To ensure RA’s and Senior RA’s are competent in delivering care and to sign off care competencies.
- To be part of monitoring individual rehabilitation plans for client programmes and support delivered by RAs, to ensure these remain current within client care plans providing suitable feedback to members of the interdisciplinary team when updates are required with support and assistance from Senior Rehabilitation Assistants.
- To escalate issues as required following STEPS guidance and operating procedures.
- To be compliant with the clinical governance requirements operating within STEPS procedures and review the compliance of the RA team, addressing any noncompliance.
- To be involved in clinical audits as and when directed.
- Proactively provide support to RA’s on the floor, working with the nurse in charge to coordinate the shift.
- To ensure the allocation of RA’s to residential clients is completed the morning after handover based on guidance from the nurse on duty.
- Ensure that RA’s are working in the areas they are allocated to during their shift and monitoring the completion of daily tasks – allocating daily tasks to RA’s when needed.
- Encourage RA’s to keep to up to date with their emails and Teams messages.
In addition to the above leadership responsibilities, the Rehabilitation Care Coordinator will also be responsible for carrying out the below duties when providing care for clients:
- To provide a high standard of personal care to STEPS clients in line with their care and rehabilitation plans.
- To assist with nursing care as instructed by the nursing team, including bathing, bed making, assisting with eating and drinking and helping with meals as necessary.
- To provide rehabilitation support to STEPS clients in line with their rehabilitation plans, often providing a first port of call for clients’ needs.
- To work with and support an inter-disciplinary team of nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, psychology team and occupational therapists delivering care and rehabilitation.
- To deliver (where appropriate and asked to do so) or support delivery of rehabilitation sessions for STEPS clients.
- To provide feedback to the senior team on how clients are progressing with their rehabilitation, escalating issues and concerns in accordance with STEPS Policies and Procedures.
- To deliver in accordance with STEPS procedures and policies at all times. To complete any additional duties as assigned by either the Senior Rehabilitation assistant and / or Senior Nurse on duty.
- Work in a sensitive and tactful manner with the team, clients and carers/family during distressing circumstances whilst being aware of their physical, mental and emotional conditions, needs, choices and concerns.
- To assist clients with activities and trips including planning and attending these.
- To liaise confidently with all colleagues of the inter-disciplinary team including nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, Speech and language therapists and rehabilitation assistants
- To maintain accurate and contemporaneous notes according to STEPS standards recording client progress in the case notes.
- To contribute to service development initiatives and promote high quality care for clients at all times.
