We are proud to share that Joe Nourse, Senior Physiotherapist, is the first and only physiotherapist in the UK to be trained in using the Meissa OT—a groundbreaking rehabilitation robot developed by EGZOTech.
To mark this milestone, Joe has written the following piece, offering first-hand insight into the Meissa OT’s capabilities, how it enhances therapy, and the exciting impact it will have on upper limb rehabilitation at STEPS Rehabilitation.
Meissa OT is an advanced rehabilitation robot created by EGZOTech, designed to support functional upper limb training through a combination of electromyography (EMG) and electrostimulation. This innovative device enables patients to actively engage in therapy by detecting even the smallest muscle contractions via its EMG-assisted movement feature. This responsive technology promotes a high level of active participation, ensuring a more effective and personalised rehabilitation process.
The Meissa OT comes equipped with five versatile, interchangeable therapy tips—ball, key, screwdriver, knob, and handle—allowing the device to be adapted for various rehabilitation exercises. These tips are tailored to simulate different functional movements, enabling patients to practice a wide range of activities that closely mimic daily tasks. Additionally, the robot offers a configurable range of motion, allowing therapists to adjust settings based on individual patient needs and progress.
To further enhance the therapy experience, the device incorporates a sophisticated 4-channel electrostimulation system that is synchronised with the phases of movement. This integration ensures targeted muscle activation during exercises, helping to strengthen muscles, improve motor control, and support overall limb functionality. The electrostimulation system works seamlessly with the device's movements, optimising muscle re-education and promoting more efficient rehabilitation.
Meissa OT is particularly beneficial for patients recovering from neurological conditions, spinal cord injuries, strokes, or upper limb injuries, as it helps them regain strength, coordination, and fine motor skills. The robot's ability to adapt to different rehabilitation requirements makes it a valuable tool for healthcare professionals and rehabilitation centres, offering a cutting-edge, personalised approach to upper limb recovery.
"Having access to the Meissa OT device at STEPS Rehabilitation has been a fantastic addition to our rehabilitation technology. I have had the opportunity to use it with a wide range of clients, particularly those with spinal cord injuries who experience a loss of function in their hands and upper limbs. The combination of electromyography and functional electrical stimulation, alongside the various handles, has proven beneficial for this client group, helping to increase range of motion and working on strengthening the muscles in their hands and upper limbs.
At STEPS, we are fortunate to have access to a variety of advanced technologies, but the Meissa OT stands out for me. It can be used both passively, with electromyography and electrical stimulation, and actively, to enhance muscle strength through a range of exercises. The device also promotes engagement through two different game modes. My personal favourite feature is the key connection, which enables training on the pincer grip. This attachment includes sensors, making it a crucial functional movement to promote for clients, helping them regain as much independence as possible following their life-changing injuries."
