My name is Sophie and I am a registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist. I am facilitating dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) sessions for STEPS clients in the Transitional Living Unit (TLU) on Monday afternoons.

DMP is a rational process in which client(s) and therapist use body movement and dance as an instrument of communication during the therapy process. DMP is an empathic creative process practiced as individual and group therapy in clinical, community, and education settings.

DMP can be used to safely explore a variety of themes depending on each person’s individual needs. This can include, identity, autonomy, traumatic experiences, expressing and healthily managing emotions, body awareness, self-acceptance and healthy relationships.

Appreciation for the mind-body connection underpins the way that I work; changes in the ways that we move our bodies lead to changes in our thoughts, emotions and behaviour (and vice versa). The principle guides how DMP uses the body as the gateway for changes and outcomes that are personal to you.
