We are delighted to announce the opening of our new outpatient Aquatic Clinic. This clinic offers aquatic therapy within our purpose-built stainless-steel hydrotherapy pool.
What is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic therapy is a dry land adjunct rehabilitation speciality that requires 1:1 treatment of a physiotherapist specialised in using the properties of water and who has the knowledge of the physiological effects of immersion to design a programme which maximises the client’s physical, physiological, or psychosocial function.
Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
The Aquatic Clinic at STEPS Rehabilitation harnesses the therapeutic advantages of water, including warm water for relaxation, buoyancy for weight reduction, hydrostatic pressure for cardiovascular improvements, and the resistance of water to strengthen muscles effectively.
Conditions Treated
The clinic accepts self-referrals and referrals from healthcare professionals, focussing on individuals who are independently mobile or have a caregiver present during treatment. Aquatic therapy is suitable for various conditions:
- Orthopaedic & Musculoskeletal Conditions: The buoyancy of water reduces joint loading, helping alleviate pain and muscle spasm. It's ideal for post-operative recovery, including hip or knee replacements, and promotes adherence in knee osteoarthritis patients.
- Neurological Conditions: The warm water facilitates physiotherapists' handling, reduces muscle tone, and enhances task-specific movements for those with neurological conditions.
- Sports Injuries: Aquatic plyometric training enhances athletic performance without the risk of soft tissue injuries, making it an effective choice for athletes during recovery.
- Rheumatological Conditions: Aquatic therapy alleviates pain, enhances postural balance, and allows for functional training without the risk of falling. Techniques like Ai Chi offer total body strengthening and relaxation.
