Located at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, the garden is a significantly enlarged version of the charity’s ‘Best in Show’, gold medal winning garden showcased at  RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023. Designed by acclaimed landscape designers Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg of Harris Bugg Studio, the garden  will offer places for reflection and adjustment, privacy and solace, joy and companionship for everyone spending time in the spinal centre, including families, friends and NHS staff.

As a Regional Garden Partner, STEPS Rehabilitation is committed to supporting the project, which will support over 360 in-patients annually, in addition to thousands of outpatients and medical professionals. Planting will commence in April 2025, with a team of eight volunteers from STEPS assisting the Head Gardener, Ruth Calder and designers in bringing the space to life ahead of the official opening in July 2025.

“At STEPS Rehabilitation, we understand the profound impact that accessible outdoor spaces and nature can have on wellbeing and rehabilitation. We are thrilled to be part of this initiative, which will provide an essential space for reflection, relaxation, and connection for those affected by spinal injuries,” said Jules Shiel-Boulger, Founder and Business Development Director at STEPS Rehabilitation.

STEPS Rehabilitation is looking forward to hosting the charity’s annual ‘Head Gardeners Away Day’ on 5th June 2025. The event will feature an expert-led study day, including a teaching and Q&A session with Darren Bracken, our Clinical Nurse Educator, lunch in the café and a guided tour of our specialist residential rehabilitation facility.

Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East is generously funded by the National Garden Scheme, Project Giving Back, and charitable supporters, with ongoing fundraising efforts ensuring its long-term sustainability.
