In September, our Specialist Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist, Tayla Brons, was invited by Fourier Rehab to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she delivered a hands-on workshop on the ArmMotus™ EMU, an innovative piece of robotic technology transforming upper limb rehabilitation.
Exploring innovation in upper limb rehabilitation
The workshop, held with the Occupational Therapy Department at Sunway Medical Centre, brought together a group of 15 occupational therapists keen to learn more about integrating robotic technology into clinical practice. Tayla led the session alongside Sarah Lim from Fourier Rehab, offering practical demonstrations, clinical insights, and opportunities for hands-on learning.
“The ArmMotus™ EMU is a highly versatile piece of equipment that supports a wide range of therapeutic goals. It can operate across multiple planes of movement and includes a feature that helps to de-weight the client’s upper limb. This means it can be used both for game-based therapy and to facilitate functional movements, depending on the client’s needs.”
When asked about her favourite feature, Tayla added:
“The gravity-compensating element is really exciting. It allows the client’s upper limb to be supported, enabling them to perform movements they may not have been able to complete before. Seeing that progress, when a client realises they can achieve something new, is always incredibly rewarding.”
Beyond the workshop
Alongside delivering clinical training, Tayla also had the chance to explore Malaysia’s culture, traditions, and world-renowned cuisine.
“I was really looking forward to experiencing Malaysia’s culture and trying the local food, which absolutely lived up to its reputation! I’m so grateful to Sarah Lim and the team for their hospitality and for sharing such a warm welcome.”
Sharing expertise, inspiring innovation
At STEPS Rehabilitation, we’re proud to see our clinicians sharing their expertise on the global stage and contributing to the development of neurorehabilitation worldwide.
“It was such a privilege to represent STEPS in Malaysia, and to share knowledge around the clinical application of innovative rehabilitation technology,” Tayla said. “I’m incredibly thankful to Fourier Rehab and to STEPS for supporting opportunities like this, and for helping us all keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in rehab.”
Fourier Rehab have recently shared a reel of Tayla during her workshop, which can be viewed here.
