At STEPS Rehabilitation, we understand that recovery from a catastrophic injury is not just a physical journey, it’s an emotional one, shared with family and friends. This Valentine’s Day, we reflect on the importance of love, family, and connection in the rehabilitation process.
A Home Away from Home
From the moment a client arrives at STEPS, our focus is on creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment, not only for the individual but also for their family and friends. Each client has their own private bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. ensuring comfort and privacy. Our independent living apartment even includes a double bed and sofa bed, allowing families to stay together where appropriate.
For clients who have spent extended periods in hospital, this home-from-home environment can be a profound relief, offering familiar routines, privacy, and comfort. Families are encouraged to visit regularly and, where appropriate, join therapy sessions, helping them remain an active part of the rehabilitation journey.
Shared Meals and Quality Time
Our café dining space skills kitchens, music room and gardens provide the perfect backdrop for families and couples to spend meaningful time together. For many clients, STEPS facilitates the first shared meals since their injury, a small but incredibly significant step in regaining some normality.
Supporting Parents and Young Adults
We recognise that some clients, particularly younger clients from age 16, may need the ongoing presence and support of parents or guardians throughout rehabilitation. STEPS ensures families can be closely involved throughout their stay. Whenever possible, we support families to stay together throughout their journey, and children are always welcome to visit . After a life-changing road traffic accident, our previous client Ruby, a young mother, was able to live at STEPS with her six-month-old son, Leon, in the independent living apartment. This allowed her to continue parenting while receiving intensive, personalised rehabilitation. From mealtimes to therapy sessions, Leon was part of Ruby’s rehabilitation, highlighting the vital role of family and children in achieving positive rehabilitation outcomes.
Couples and Shared Recovery
Accommodation at STEPS, can also be tailored to meet the needs of couples, both partners have sustained injuries. Our facility offers the flexibility for partners to stay together or nearby. Being able to remain close during rehabilitation can improve mental and emotional wellbeing, motivation, and overall recovery outcomes, helping couples navigate this challenging period side by side.
